Spotlight on FMG native title conduct—7.30 (ABC-TV tonight)
TONIGHT
7.30 ABC Television—Tuesday (20 November)
- ABC’s 7.30 tonight investigates evidence brought to light by whistleblower/solicitor, Kerry Savas, who alleges underhanded conduct by Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) in its dealings with the Yindjibarndi people, over Fortescue’s Solomon Hub iron ore project.
- This follows a series of revelations over the past year about FMG’s campaign against the Yindjibarndi; their failure to report heritage sites, and their ‘declassification’ and destruction of heritage sites.
- Tonight Mr Savas gives an insider’s account of the bitter fight over the project, and a view into FMG’s heritage approvals process, mired in accusations.

How did I miss this? Just awesome, bloody awesome!
This gives me much heart that the good ol Indigenous Times is getting heard and not just by us. This is the first tickle of hope I have had that something good may come. To Gerry Georgatos, Australia’s best journalist, you have been worth your weight in gold to the Indigenous Times, you are a friend to people.
With deep gratitude, Henry
Whatever happened to a reasonable man test?
They used to use it in some court decisions.
ie. Did FMG act in good faith in it’s negotiations with the tribe? If the reasonable man test says no.. then this is what I believe should happen.
Strip FMG of the mining licence. Give it to the YAC for free and with no stipulations. They find a partner willing to do it how they want and with a partner willing to pay them the % they want. If they don’t find one today, tomorrow or the next day, then, no problem, the ores still there and one will come along eventually.
Simple, easy and fair. What about the FMG shareholders you may ask? How’s it fair? Well FMG didn’t act in good faith, they therefore don’t deserve the licence, don’t blame the native title holders, blame the management of FMG for not being fair. So let the YAC find a miner the will make all parties happy and move on.
